Infrared Sauna
Therapy Canberra
Where Deep Relaxation
Meets Rehabilitation
At Powerhouse Canberra, we understand the importance of stretching and warming down for optimal recovery and rehabilitation. This is why we have expanded our clinic to include a state-of-the-art recovery zone, which includes infrared saunas.
Whether you're hoping to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, improve sleep quality, or reduce muscle fatigue, infrared sauna therapy may be just what you've been looking for.
Our team will curate your sauna experience according to your individual needs and goals. When used as part of a treatment plan, your session will be tailored to the specifications set out by your practitioner. However, sauna sessions are also available independently — if you wish to experience the benefits without the need for a treatment plan, you are welcome to book a session at your convenience.
What Is An Infrared Sauna?
Unlike a traditional sauna, which heats the air around the body, an infrared sauna uses infrared lamps or panels to heat the body directly. It allows for a lower ambient temperature while still inducing the heat and sweat needed to potentially receive maximum health benefits.
Infrared light typically generates a more comfortable heat that can penetrate deeply into our joints, muscles, and tissues. As the heat is dry rather than wet, many people also find it easier to breathe during their session than with a traditional sauna.
The Potential Benefits of Infrared Saunas
Supplementing your treatment with consistent infrared sauna sessions may offer many key benefits, including:
Detoxification
Sweating is the body’s natural way of releasing toxins; hopping in the sauna may help to speed up this process.
Relaxation
The heat generated may reduce muscle soreness and tension, increase blood flow, and trigger the release of endorphins.
Pain Relief
Infrared heat may help to relieve muscle aches, joint pain, and inflammation. It may also provide relief for chronic conditions such as arthritis.
Cardiovascular Health
The heat may increase your heart rate, improving your overall cardiovascular health. It may also help lower blood pressure and improve circulation.
Skin Health
Sweating also helps to unclog pores, which may help reduce the appearance of skin conditions like acne and eczema. Infrared may also improve skin tone and reduce signs of ageing.
Immune System
Infrared may also help boost the immune system by allowing it to function more effectively through increased circulation and toxin release.
Weight Loss
The heat generated may help to increase your metabolism and burn calories, which may be beneficial for those looking to lose weight.
Muscle Recovery
Heating the body in this way may reduce the production of lactic acid, potentially improving your recovery process and flexibility.
Better Health
Infrared saunas may help to balance the body’s cortisol levels, which helps to relax and relieve tension, potentially leading to better sleep.

What Does a
Session Look Like?
All infrared sauna sessions must be pre-booked either via our website or by contacting our team. This may be done in consultation with your physiotherapist to ensure it’s the right addition to your treatment plan.
Sessions run for a total of 25 minutes, and are not necessarily private (please contact us directly if you wish to book a private sauna or to enquire about membership options). You will have access to the Hockey Centre changerooms and showers before and after your session.

Your Infrared Sauna
Questions Answered
What should I wear and bring to a sauna session?
Minimal clothing is recommended when using the sauna. Swimwear or running shorts (with a crop top for women) are popular choices. Underwear is also fine to wear, although we do suggest bringing a clean pair to change into afterwards.
You will need to bring a towel to sit on and dry off with. Hydration is essential when using the sauna, so bring a water bottle, too.
Should I use the sauna before or after treatment?
For hygiene reasons, your infrared sauna experience will be booked after your treatment or gym session. This will also give you the chance to relax and recover after your treatment, ensuring that you’ll be well-rested when it’s time to head home.
Who shouldn’t use an infrared sauna?
Exposure to infrared light is not recommended for everyone. It should generally be avoided by those with a pacemaker, cardiovascular conditions (such as hypertension), chronic conditions or diseases associated with a reduced ability to sweat (such as multiple sclerosis), and haemophilia.
Those who are pregnant, have a joint injury, or have a fresh scar should also avoid using the sauna.
